Dress code

Dear Parent/Guardians:
PS/IS 116 has a mandatory school uniform policy.  All students are required to wear the school uniform daily.  We are asking for your support.  School uniforms create a safer community, a greater sense of school belonging, improved student behavior, and improved academic performance, as well as reducing school clothing costs for families.  Below details the proper school attire by grade:

  • Grades Pre K-5:  Light Blue Tops/Navy Blue Bottoms

  • Grades 6-8:  White Tops/ Black Bottoms

All students must attend school each day in the school uniform.  Students may not wear other articles of clothing (ie hoodie/sweatshirt) over their school uniform while they are in the building.  Students that are not in the required school uniform will be directed to return to school the following day with a school uniform.  In addition, students cannot wear Crocs or hats in the school building.  Headwear for religious observance is allowed.
If you need financial assistance with purchasing the school uniform, please speak to the Parent Coordinator, Ms. Farida Mooklal.
Thank you for your continued support of our Community of Learners.

Hoodie Policy

January 2, 2024

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On several occasions this school year, I noticed that the wearing of hoods is creating a safety risk. Therefore, for the remainder of the school year we will be asking all students to remove their hoods. (Hoodies are still permitted but the hood cannot be pulled up over the head). The wearing of hoods is impeding our ability to see our students’ faces and, at times, properly identify them. This is a serious safety concern.

We ask students to lower hoods immediately upon entering the school building. Hoodies make it extremely difficult for teachers and staff members to recognize students, especially during high traffic times like morning arrival and class changes. Furthermore, it would be very challenging to quickly and accurately spot students who shouldn’t be on school property. It also greatly hinders a teacher’s ability to assess whether a student may be in distress and therefore quickly help students in need. These situations are unsafe and potentially dangerous for school buildings.

PS/IS116Q remains steadfast in its mission to provide the safest environment for our students and staff. My decision was based on our current circumstances and climate and is consistent with the following NYCDOE Dress Code Guidelines, in accordance with New York City Department of Education (DOE) policy, students have the right to determine their own attire, except where the dress is dangerous, interferes with the teaching and learning process, or violates the DOE’s anti-discrimination policy. Schools may develop and implement a dress code if it is consistent with DOE policies and the guidelines.

I hope you can understand that I am very sensitive to the needs of all our children. The safety and security of our students is our paramount responsibility.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tara Malagoli, Ph.D.
